HIV Care: Overview
People living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can live long, healthy lives with the right care and treatment. Modern HIV care focuses on early diagnosis, effective antiretroviral therapy (ART), ongoing monitoring, and support to live well, ensuring that individuals can achieve an undetectable viral load, meaning the virus cannot be passed on to others.
Treatment consists of daily antiretroviral medicines that reduce the amount of HIV in the blood.
Most people achieve an undetectable viral load within around six months, meaning the virus cannot be transmitted sexually (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable).
ART is recommended for all people diagnosed with HIV and is provided through specialist NHS HIV services
Patients attend routine appointments at HIV clinics for blood tests, medication reviews, and general health checks.
Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team, which may include HIV consultants, nurses and pharmacists.
Within our clinic we have a team of Consultants providing HIV Care and they are complimented by a HIV Lead Nurse and medical secreatry.
Our HIV nurse will be your primary point of contact for all aspects of your HIV care. She provides holistic, person‑centred support and will work with you to understand your individual needs. As part of your care, she can offer guidance, ongoing monitoring, and referrals to other clinical or support services when needed.
